James "Jim" Allen Adams

James Allen Adams, 87, of Spring, Texas, passed away on August 29, 2023, in Conroe, Texas. He was born on July 28, 1936, to the late Allan A. Adams and Avon Elizabeth (Corley) Adams. 

A graveside service will be held at 1:30PM on Sunday, September 3, 2023, at Adams Cemetery with Bro. Tim Perkins officiating.

James (Jim) Allen Adams, and Frances Ann Adams, left this world as they lived — side-by-side — on August 29, 2023, after a lifetime of devotion to their beloved family and to each other.

Jim was born on July 28, 1936, in Tenaha, Texas; and Frances on March 18, 1939, in Port Arthur, Texas.

Jim spent his high school years as a star lineman for the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School and became a highly recruited player statewide. He ultimately played football at Rice University and the University of Houston (UH).

Frances and Jim married at the Methodist Temple in Port Arthur, Texas on December 28, 1959. They were very much in love and happy to be together.

As young parents, Jim and Frances sacrificed a lot to provide for their three beloved boys. Christmas was always a joyful time in their household, and they loved to lavish their sons (and later, grandchildren and great grandchildren) with gifts and, thanks to Frances, an overabundance of delicious, homemade food.

As the boys grew up and started engaging in extracurricular activities, Jim and Frances never missed an event. Jim was often the coach for his own boys and other kids in the community, and frequently led their teams to victories. The whole family had a shared love of sports, from tennis to swimming to golf. Once his grandson Travis was old enough, Jim and Travis spent countless hours playing golf.

Jim and Frances were also huge UH football and basketball supporters. Jim’s fandom was so fervent that he once had a near-fatal heart attack ahead of a Final Four UH basketball game. Though he narrowly made it through, he still begged doctors to let him watch the game (which sadly ended in a terrible, last second loss).

Both were always dressed to the nines, with Jim proud of his personal style and Frances looking prim and proper. Frances wouldn’t leave the house without a pristine outfit, often topped with fashionable glasses. Both had an affinity for nice jewelry, and both (particularly Jim) loved to shop.

Jim and Frances were both loyal to a fault and reveled in the connections they made throughout their lives. Jim never met a stranger and would talk to anyone; he had a knack for judging someone’s character the moment he met them. Frances loved her friends deeply and frequently played cards with a close group.

Though they had different personalities, they complemented each other. Jim was a leader and motivator with a playful personality who held firm to his opinions and raised their three sons with a sense of discipline. Frances was proper, caring and well-mannered, perpetually devoted to her friends, family and tending to the household.

Above all, their greatest accomplishments were the titles Pawpaw and Mimi. The two gave everything they had to their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, even learning the latest technology so they could keep in close touch. Both were always available to offer advice (sometimes unsolicited), and the whole family knew they could count on Pawpaw and Mimi.

Jim and Frances are survived by their sons Jimmy and his wife, Denise, Greg and his wife, Cathy, and Jary; grandchildren Lauren Griggs and her husband, Chris, Elise Adams, Travis Adams and his wife, Katie, Chelsea Adams, and Sarah Adams and her mother Angela Renee Arechuk; great grandchildren Kolton James Griggs and Madeline Jordan Adams; and Frances’ brother J.B. “Buddy” Jordan Jr.

They were predeceased by Aster Allen Adams; Avon “Elizabeth” Adams; J.B. Jordan and Thelma Frances Jordan.

While Jim and Frances will be deeply missed by all who cherished them, their loved ones take comfort in knowing that they went home together to be with God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the words of Richard Bach, “True love stories never have endings.”
